Job Description

Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the CAPE Team of Siemens Industry, Inc. develops and promotes the PSS®CAPE software for power system protection engineering. PSS®CAPE’s graphical network modeling and protection system simulation support automatic relay setting, detection of miscoordinated settings, and event analysis. PSS®CAPE has the largest and most detailed library of relay models available. With more detailed and more accurate models, protection engineers study real life conditions, perform wide-area reviews, predict protection system performance, and much more. Siemens provides ongoing technical support and PSS®CAPE-related services for its utility and engineering consulting customers all over the world.

Who We Are

The Siemens CAPE Team is a group of thirteen creative, enthusiastic electrical power and software engineers and staff who provide analytical tools and technical support to transmission protection engineers in over 50 countries. Our offerings are known as the PSS®CAPE (Computer-Aided Protection Engineering) software. We take pride in our roles as the authors of this most-comprehensive protection simulation package in the industry, developers of ever more advanced functions aimed at making electric energy transmission systems more reliable, and guiding engineers at electric utilities how to apply them. We are located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a great place to live and work.

Where We Are Going

While we have created the most thorough, reliable, and trusted environment for protection system simulation, there are great challenges ahead. Many pressures around the world are moving the power industry toward continued expansion, renewal, and improved efficiency and reliability. The proliferation of renewable energy resources such as wind and solar is fundamentally changing the way in which the grid is operated. Analytical tools such as PSS®CAPE are keeping up but more work is needed to support the needs of the grid engineers.

No one wants a blackout; therefore, government regulatory agencies are demanding more of their electric utilities: more effort and more proof of that effort. Yet in most places there are fewer engineers to accomplish this mandate. PSS®CAPE has already gone a long way toward automating the setting of relays and verifying the coordination of protective devices system-wide. Now we are refining those functions and placing them within easy reach of all electric utilities. We can’t do this without help from the best people we can find.

Whom We Seek

Siemens wants to hire electrical power engineers with special talents and interests in power system modeling, protection, and software development; Ph.D. in related field is normally required; talented M.S engineers with prior applicable experience are also encouraged to apply.

If you have previous experience working in a utility or consulting firm, that would be very beneficial since we provide model development and study services to electric utilities.

Responsibilities

Depending on your aptitude and interests, you can expect to have some of these responsibilities at Siemens:

  • Manage/guide/develop several exciting prospective applications of the PSS®CAPE protection system model in support of electric utility operations.
  • Develop and implement detailed phasor-based models of protective devices, primarily modern digital relays.
  • Develop programs and macros for customized protection studies and compliance with NERC and similar governing body standards.
  • Develop and extend models for conventional and inverter-coupled (wind/solar) generators, FACTS devices, etc., for use in the protection system simulation environment.
  • Extend and apply our unique link between the PSS®CAPE phasor-based protection system model and the time-domain environment of electromechanical transient stability analysis. Single-pole breaker opening/reclosing is an active area of development. Further work on modeling System Integrity Protection Schemes (SIPS) is planned.
  • Contribute to design and development of a new simulation technique that combines electromagnetic transients simulations with the PSS®CAPE protection system model. 
  • Manage or join a team that helps utilities with development of their protection system models and conduct wide-area protection coordination reviews with them.
  • Participate in preparation of technical papers for conference presentations.
  • Provide ongoing customer support, helping utility engineers with day-to-day questions arising in their use of PSS®CAPE. This is a rewarding task shared by nearly all of our engineers.
  • Teach practicing protection engineers the best ways to apply PSS®CAPE software in their daily work. We provide virtual as well as face-to-face instruction at a customer’s location.

Qualifications

  • PHD. in Electrical Engineering with specialization in Power Systems; talented M.S. candidates with prior applicable experience will be accepted as well.
  • Knowledge of power system modeling for computer analysis, symmetrical component theory, short-circuit calculations.
  • Knowledge of power system protection principles and applications.
  • Programming experience in C, C++, C#, FORTRAN, or other programming languages or environments is preferable.
  • Previous utility or consulting experience is helpful, but not required.
