Head of Rail Electrification

Job Description

Siemens Mobility is currently seeking a leader for an exciting opportunity as the Head of our Rail Electrification (RE) business.  The successful candidate will be responsible for driving the strategic direction and owning the profitable growth of RE in the North American market and ensuring operational excellence in the delivery and installation of rail electrification projects and products to our customers.

Worldwide, nearly one quarter of all railroad miles are electric-powered, but in the U.S., that figure is less than one percent. This individual has the opportunity to grow the market, while providing American communities a more sustainable transportation solution. Whether mass transit or intra-city lines, electrified rail is zero-emission and highly reliable.

Reporting to the Head of the Siemens Mobility Rail Infrastructure business unit in North America, this role can be located in any of our Siemens Mobility North American sites, including New York, Sacramento, Pittsburgh, Louisville, or Portland and will work extensively with the Rail Infrastructure management team.

Key deliverables include:

  • Own the day to day RE Business Unit P&L. Ensure performance metrics are on track and achieved (incl. revenue, profit, cash flow, EVA, SG&A, efficiency)
  • Execute the growth plan for the RE Business Unit, measure performance against milestones.
  • As the senior executive leader for RE, take ownership for the satisfaction of all our customers.

  • Responsible for acquisition and selling of sophisticated (infrastructure) projects and for high performing bid and execution project teams.
  • Leverage customer relationships, market knowledge and technical expertise and understanding of key projects to drive and build robust installation opportunities.
  • Maintain excellent & personal relationships with key customers and business partners through direct interaction/involvement.
  • Actively collaborate with regional management and the business unit headquarters and division.
  • Operate as a “full and equal partner”; maintain the ability to offer constructive criticism, argue persuasively and collaborate effectively with Siemens RE business leaders from a broad range of cultures and environments.
  • Conduct annual business planning process which includes development of targets and budgets and periodically present reports of the business performance and strategy to the RE management.
  • Provide mentorship in the areas of bid/no bid decision making, development of offer strategies, deal closing, contract terms negotiating, and claims management.
  • Develop personnel within the local RE Business Unit team through personal mentorship, by embracing diversity, and by strengthening the personnel through training and development.

Additional duties:

  • Represent the Division (as the person in charge of the RE business) in front of the customer from the initial transaction through to commercial operation, throughout the warranty period and beyond.
  • Along with field sales, maintain key executive technical relationships with customer decision makers.
  • Lead negotiations with customers when it comes to dispute resolution or claims resulting from contract execution/implementation.
  • Responsible for maintaining and coordinating the Limits of Authority process in accordance with Company guidelines.

Qualifications & experience include:

  • BSEE/BSME is required. MS preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of general management and project management experience
  • Extensive project-based business experience
  • Experience in selling / implementing of sophisticated (rail / infrastructure) projects
  • Solid technical knowledge of turnkey project execution
  • Understanding of project financing structures
  • Understanding of customer procurement models
  • Strong communication skills and interpersonal expertise are crucial.
  • Interpersonal style that allows him/her to be demanding when setting and achieving results while working optimally in a team based environment
  • Leadership methodologies e.g. for personnel management and development, team development, motivation, conflict management
  • Ability to work in a culturally diverse matrixed organization
