An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Engineering Manager to join our Traffic Management team within the Siemens Mobility Limited, Rail Infrastructure business.

We will consider multiple locations for this role across our UK Siemens Mobility offices including; Chippenham, Birmingham, Glasgow, Derby, York, Manchester, Poole and Croydon.

Our technology is conceived, designed, developed and manufactured in the UK and incorporates custom platforms that are utilized in a vast variety of products and applications, including our market-leading Siemens Controlguide Westcad VDU Control Centre suite which has the largest install base of any system of its type.

We have also secured two frameworks for the next eight years where we will be providing our route control Traffic Management solution with a direct interface to our signaling level Westcad advanced route setting solution. This provides our customer with integrated control levels and exceptional flexibility to manage their train service and minimize delay.

Your role, and what you’ll be doing:

In this role you will work on railway traffic management projects throughout the full project life cycle, working in partnership with the multi-skilled, multi-disciplinary team. This is from the early stages of bids and tenders, specification, system design, through validation, testing, approvals and installation, to on-going customer support.

As the Engineering Manager for Traffic Management & Applications for the established Control Systems team, you will work with a team of engineers from junior to senior levels. You will guide them through the implementation of projects and new product applications to deliver technical solutions which meets the customers’ needs and complies with industry specifications.

You will be managing an expanding team working collaboratively with the customer to deliver Traffic Management solutions for one of the most complicated and varied railways in the world.

What will be my Responsibilities?

  • Manage the portfolio of Traffic Management work-packages across a number of projects and deliver these to time, quality, and cost parameters agreed with the senior Control Systems management team.
  • Set the strategy in conjunction with the Control Systems Engineering Manager and Director for the development of applications to meet the Traffic Management and Control Systems customer needs.
  • Ensure the application development team are delivering developments to the strategy within time, cost and quality requirements.
  • Consistent implementation of company engineering standards and processes as agreed with the Head of Engineering and Chief Engineer.
  • Measurement of engineering performance against metrics agreed with Delivery Director.
  • Champions, sponsors and participates in improvement via proactive initiatives.
  • Implement an assurance regime to ensure compliance with standards and implement corrective actions where necessary.
  • Prepare and update work activity plans to maximize resource utilization/efficiency.
  • Prepare and maintain resource schedule to identify resource requirements to meet short term work bank surplus / shortfall in employees and manage the schedule to mitigate the problem.
  • Allocation of engineering resources to meet the targets determined by the Control Systems Director.
  • Conduct regular performance appraisals of key staff and manage their performance.
  • Develop specific training to address competency development requirements.
  • Act as mentor to the engineering community and promote personal development via Continuous Professional Development and Personal Development Plans.

What Qualifications, Skills and Experience do I need?

  • Experience of managing large multidisciplinary teams
  • Established Professional status within the signalling industry, with significant experience of engineering implementation on large signalling schemes in the UK.
  • Commercially aware – able to forecast and manage resource utilisation and costs.
  • Safety culture aware – to be able to influence and develop an existing safety culture to latest thinking and practice.
  • Supportive of a consistent company wide approach to improvement.
  • Strong leadership qualities including personal drive, persuasive communication skills, enthusiasm and support for company goals.
  • A broad base of Engineering skills, experiences, knowledge and competencies covering the full engineering lifecycle, together with the requisite personal characteristics, to take responsibility for facilitating cross disciplinary Engineering activity in complex, innovative and commercially challenging environments.
  • Previous experience in Systems Engineering, Project Engineering and Design of real-time systems, test and installation environments.
  • Strong and effective communicator at all levels within the Business – and in front of new and existing customers – both internal and external.
