Research Engineer - Automated Driving and Driver Assistance

Job Description

We are looking for a Researcher in automated driving and driver assistance system testing and analysis technologies with a focus on perceived human safety and comfort at Siemens Industry Software.

The position will be based in Leuven, Belgium.

Project description

BECAREFUL (“Belgian consortium for EnhanCed sAfety & comfoRt pErception of Future aUtonomous vehicLes) is a Flemish research project funded by VLAIO. Four industrial partners (IVEX, XenomatiX, Septentrio and Siemens) work together with two universities, i.e. KU Leuven MECO and TU Darmstadt.

Within this project Siemens Industry Software (SISW) will be active to further strengthen and extend its competitive position in: i) the 1D, 3D and environment simulation tools, ii) the test methodologies, analysis and data acquisition tools and iii) the design and validation of human-like control algorithms for such automated system.

The specific focus of the TEST RTD team of SISW is a) on new data capturing and system monitoring capabilities b) data analysis and system diagnosis methods specific for perceived safety and comfort and c) verification and validation requirements towards comfortable and safe AVs using Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL), Human-in-the-Loop (HuiL) and Vehicle-in-the-Loop (ViL) environments.

Job description

Within the BECAREFUL project, SISW has an open position that will cooperate with the other RTD team members and project partners for the execution and coordination of the activities in this project.

The candidate will define and select suitable test setups to assess perceived autonomous vehicle (AV) safety and comfort. In a next phase, optimal scenarios and test methodologies need to be defined, created and tested to generate adequate datasets for the objective-subjective correlation of perceived safety and comfort. After measurements, research methods need to be created to automatically detect and manage interesting comfort and safety related events in a multi-sensor (lidar, camera, radar, position, vibration, hum monitoring, etc) dataset and flexible algorithms need to be created to enable the reliable and automated extraction of environment models from raw environment perception sensor data. Finally, subjective-objective correlation models for automated driving must be created to access perceived safety and comfort based on objective data and to be able to evaluate the human-like car controller.

Interact with the project partners and with peers within the RTD team to plan and coordinate the ongoing research activities. Will contribute to reporting of project results towards the funding agencies as well as internal reporting for the dissemination of the results to project engineers and ensure alignment with business objectives.

A suitable candidate:

  • Has an MSc. in Engineering (Mechatronic, Mechanical, Electromechanical).
  • Is proficient in spoken and written English in view of collaboration, presentation and reporting.
  • Skills in programming languages such as Python, C, C++
  • Good Knowledge in control and (hybrid) simulation-testing engineering.
  • Has experience with automotive applications.
  • Has a creative and critical attitude towards technical problems.
  • Is motivated to work in a result-oriented way and can work independently within the team.
Competences that are considered as an additional asset/advantage:
  • Adequate proficiency in spoken and written Dutch considering communication with national funding agencies (VLAIO).
  • Ph.D. in a relevant area of expertise.
  • Previous experience with Simcenter tools (Testlab, SCADAS, Prescan, Amesim, etc)
  • The contract will be for a period of 36 months, preferably in the timeframe March 2021– March 2024.
