Mechanical Assembler II

Job Description

Position Overview

Under minimal supervision, the Assembler II is responsible for assembling component parts for rail communications equipment and working in more specialized production roles.

Reports directly to Production Supervisor and/or Team Leader.


The Assembler II will be responsible for assembling parts using assembly prints and a Bill of Materials (BOM). Also responsible for:

- Read, interpret and follow basic blueprints, diagrams, engineering drawings, specifications, bills of materials, and other written instructions or procedures to assemble equipment and products accurately

- Utilize handheld tools such as a handheld screw and drill gun

- Work with the Quality department to ensure the product meets quality standards

- Ability to train entry-level assemblers

- Wire crimping, stripping, and soldering

- Perform 5S activities and maintain equipment in proper working order, maintain and improve work area order and cleanliness

- Access and follow schematic drawings from the computer system

- Perform required function using the standard work instructions and illustrations provided

- Perform work safely and healthily; ensuring deviations to standard work instructions that will lead to quality, productivity, or safety problems are immediately identified

- Actively participate in cell meetings to understand instruction, customer and production needs, quality challenges as well as other vital issues

- Identify and communicate ideas to cell leaders that support improving the cell’s performance and the elimination of waste

- Scan on and off of jobs in the SAP system

- Use the cell’s visual boards as a means for communicating challenges to your cell as well as a vehicle for receiving information on KPI for your cell

- Participate in Kaizen and other cell improvement teams

- Use Kanban methodology to help the team work more efficiently 

- Support other assembly production requirements

- Actively participates in Continuous Improvement meetings as needed

- Display professional conduct with customers and coworkers

- Ability to confirm quantities in the MRP system

- Attends company meetings as required

- Knowledge of all duties will be cross-functional, but specific responsibilities may be assigned by team leads, manager, or plant manager

- May be required to perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required

• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

• Knowledge of how to read drawings and any applicable industry standards

• Must be able to read work instructions, schematics, assembly drawings, and prints

• Intermediate computer skills required

• Good oral and written communication skills

• Basic math skills

• Problem-solving skills

• Excellent soldering skills

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

• Minimum of 2-3 years of manufacturing experience preferred

• Based on work cell, may be required to utilize a computer, software, and other specialized tools and equipment

• Previous electronic experience in PCB or Mechanical assembly and/or cable assembly preferred
