The position: 
Do you have a proven track record of managing and mentoring designers in the context of software development?  Have you been practicing design before becoming a design manager? Are you passionate about the design craft, co-creation, design centric strategy and processes? We are looking for an ambitious and creative Design Manager to join the AppDev Unit in Rotterdam.


Design team:
The Design team is a distributed team across Boston, Pune, Shanghai, and Rotterdam, with many disciplines. From user experience research and service design to brand and product design, the Mendix design team is filled with creatives focused on elevating the user experience across our products. We believe that collaboration across the whole organization is the key to our success and have centralized partnerships with all R&D groups and units. 


Objectives and Responsibilities:
You will be managing Product Designers and Service Designers that work on elevating Mendix as a multi-experience platform. Your work will enable your team to take the developer experience of our products to the next level. You are responsible for designers in the AppDev Unit, and you provide the environment in which they can deliver the best results, both in speed and quality. In this Unit, designers work with the Frontend teams, the Logic teams, the Mendix Assist team, and the Studio and the Studio Pro Core teams. This Unit's ultimate goal is to make Mendix Studio and Studio Pro the most-loved low-code Integrated Development Environments in the world.


Team health - You create a positive environment where designers can make the most impact and co-create human-centric innovative solutions in collaboration with engineering teams:
  • Hire a world class team, grow talent, and ensure optimal team dynamics 
  • Align on dependencies, and keep up to date with the status of the work of all your designers and their commitments
  • Guard designers from needless interruptions and encourage maker time
Design advocacy - You evangelize the value of product design, service design and user experience research:
  • Co-create the long-term design-centric strategy and ambitions for design at Mendix
  • Build strong relationships with your cross-functional peers and proactively work with Product Managers to prioritize product design work
  • Identify strategic product design opportunities in the product areas you are responsible for and drive cross-unit initiatives and programs 
Product knowledge and judgement - Ensure there is sufficient focus on the quality of the user experience to achieve customer success:
  • Understand the business context of your designers
  • Develop deep product and domain knowledge 
  • Judge design deliverables and raise design quality continuously by running design critique sessions 
Team effectiveness - Create processes where needed, remove processes wherever and whenever possible:
  • Create and continuously improve collaborative processes within your unit
  • Enable designers, engineering roles and stakeholders to work pro-actively with each other
  • Make sure design centric processes are practical, light-weight, well documented and known in your unit 
Mentorship and coaching - Provide guidance on design matters
  • Actively share knowledge with your direct reports
  • Mentor engineering manager peers on design processes and best practices
  • Mentor and help your designers uncover a growth plan based on their interests and ability, identifying the right strategy to help them achieve that plan
Requirements:
  • A minimum of 10-year overall experience
  • 7+ years of experience as a designer and 3+ years as a design manager
  • Collaborative and proactive leadership mindset
  • Experience driving organizational change with stakeholders and peers
  • Have excellent communication and coaching skills; able to give and receive feedback pro-actively, using good interpersonal skills 
  • Excellent eye for quality design and a passion for designing an exceptional product experience
  • Experience with Agile product management & Agile software development
  • Experience shipping enterprise grade b2b products and services
  • Able to function independently in a fast-paced, hyper-growth work environment
