Senior User Experience Researcher

Job Description

Mendix is on a mission to enable anyone in any organization – from the marketing coordinator to the software developer to the CEO – to create things that are transformational for their company.  We are fundamentally reinventing the way applications are created and we’re reinventing the future of software development.  Sounds ambitious, right?  We agree.

Not to brag, but nearly 4,000 organizations worldwide, including KLM, Medtronic, Merck, and Philips, rely on Mendix to build web and mobile applications.  Thousands of our customers use our platform to delight their clients and empower their employees. It’s no surprise that we’re a recognized Leader by Gartner and Forrester in a red-hot market expected to exceed $21 billion by 2022.  Ok, maybe we did want to brag a little.  But we’re proud of what we’ve accomplished…and…we’re humble enough to admit that we need you to make us even more effective.

Are you dreaming about being the next Erika Hall, Elizabeth Churchill or Jan Chipchase? Are you passionate about identifying and articulating user motivations, wants, needs, and pain points, using appropriate and creative research methods? Do you thrive in sharing these insights in a collaborative environment, with design, data, development, and customer teams? Are you enthusiastic about translating insights into action and ultimately, user-friendly products?
Do you have a proven track record in a research function in a software development context? We are looking for a senior user experience researcher to join our growing research team.

About AppDev
Your work will enable Mendix to take the developer experience of our products to the next level.  Your work will be focussed on the initiatives within the AppDev unit, the biggest R&D unit, which is at the heart of our products (with Mendix Studio & Studio Pro, the core tools for Mendix developers). This Unit's ultimate goal is to make Mendix Studio and Studio Pro the most-loved low-code Integrated Development Environments in the world. In this Unit, you will work with designers and product managers in the Frontend teams, the Logic teams, the Mendix Assist team, and the Studio and the Studio Pro Core teams.

About the Design team
The Design team is a distributed discipline across several units in Boston, Pune, Shanghai and Rotterdam, with many disciplines. From user experience research and service design to brand and product design, the Mendix design team is filled with creatives focused on elevating the user experience across our products. The team is always exploring new ways to be creative and tinkering with new technologies or techniques. We believe that cross-unit and cross-disciplinary collaboration is the key to our success.

About the User Experience Research team:
User Experience Research is a growing subdiscipline, part of the Product Design Team (in the R&D department). In the past two years we have grown from no researchers, to currently 9 research specialists, now also including a Research Operations Specialist. The User Experience Researchers work with one of the R&D units (in this case the AppDev unit), or from the central research team. To discuss anything relevant to User Experience Researchers, we have a bi-weekly team meeting. The User Experience Research Team is also driving the User Insights Guild, where we meet with Product Analysts, Service Designers, and anyone else interested in our work and insights. Our research toolset contains SurveyMonkey, Lookback and Dovetail, but of course we also use tools like Zoom, Miro and Dropbox Paper when planning and conducting our research.

Responsibilities
As a Senior User Experience Researcher with the AppDev unit, you explore drivers and barriers contributing to the user experience of Mendix developers, and enable user centric and strategic design decisions.

This means you:
  • Investigate and prioritize relevant research topics for the AppDev unit. Based on company and unit level priorities, ongoing alignment with product managers, product designers and service designers, and your own proactive suggestions, you create and own the research roadmap for the AppDev unit.
  • Define, scope, plan, and conduct user experience research. Based on research priorities, you define the scope and research questions, select the appropriate method(s), and create a plan for your research. You align on participant recruitment criteria with your stakeholders and the Research Operations Specialist. When conducting research, you always try to include others: you invite stakeholders to observe fieldwork, or empower others to do research.
  • Synthesise and share compelling insights that inform both product strategy and product design decisions. You are comfortable making trade offs between diving deep into your data, or delivering quick insights. You communicate your research results to your direct stakeholders in the AppDev unit, but always try to keep a wider audience in mind. You effectively use different channels (e.g. Slack, our User Insight Guild) to create awareness for your research and insights.
  • Contribute to maturing, expanding and improving our research practice. Research is a new discipline at Mendix, and within the Product Design team. This means that our research team is constantly making an effort to becoming more mature and improving our impact. Examples vary from small and practical (creating templates for research plans, interview guides, etc.) to more fundamental (creating a universal tagging structure, to be used across projects).
  • Foster collaboration with other disciplines. We truly believe that collaborating cross-disciplines is essential in making an impact. Therefore we expect you to (proactively) foster collaboration with other disciplines: collaboration with product analysts to creating solid insights, collaboration inside and outside R&D in order to tap in to other data sources, but also build strong relationships with product designers, service designers, product managers and the engineering teams in AppDev
Requirements
  • 5+ years in a user experience research role at a software-focused company or equivalent experience
  • Broad experience in generating insights from cutting edge quantitative and qualitative research methods, and using techniques like context mapping
  • Demonstrated experience researching applications designed to serve multiple user profiles who operate in complex environments
  • A proven track record of shipped products driven by research insights
  • Degree in HCI, Psychology, Anthropology, Social Science, or a related field
Our recruitment process for this position consists of the following steps:
  • You apply by means of a CV, cover letter, and sharing a challenging research project and how you approached this
  • One of our recruiters will give you a call. In this call they can tell you more about Mendix and our company culture, and check if you would fit with the culture.
  • This is followed by an interview with the design and research management.
  • The final step is a portfolio presentation: you get to present yourself and your work to the team and unit you will be working wit.
Our Guiding Principles

While we live on different continents, speak different languages, and work on different things, we are bound by our “MendixBlue” guiding principles.  Being “MendixBlue” means that you live the culture, and you consistently improve it as we grow.  It’s kind of a big deal.

We put the customer first.  Without our customers, we have no business.  So, if you act in the best interest of our customers, always…you belong here.

We think big. We work to have a meaningful, lasting impact on the world.  So, if you aim high and think long term…you belong here.

We innovate.  We want to be what happens next.  So, if you ask “what if?” and work to find a way or make one…you belong here.

We nurture talent.  We look, not just at the sum of what an individual has done, but at the potential of who they can be.  So, if you’re up for learning from your failures…you belong here.

We hear every voice.  Inflated egos don’t last here, humility does.  So, if you share credit and ensure that the best ideas win – regardless of who they come from…you belong here.

We own it.  If something needs doing, we do it. So, if you focus on the outcome, and take initiative to get it done…you belong here.

We have fun.  We use laughter as a common language.  We can ask for help and we’re happy to give it.  So, if you find joy and purpose in what you do…you belong here.
