Siemens has the opportunity for a Sustainability Advisor to join our Rail Infrastructure business. The role would report to the Sustainability Manager and form an integral part of the corporate Sustainability Team and wider Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability function.

You will directly support the ongoing development and delivery of the corporate sustainability strategy while also working with internal partners to facilitate implementation of contracted sustainability requirements on projects.

This is a 12-month fixed term contract, and we encourage applications from candidates considering either full or part-time work. 

What are your responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the role will be to:

  • Work alongside the Sustainability Manager to support delivery of the business’ Sustainability Strategy, and implementation of related workstreams.
  • Current workstreams include those related to decarbonisation; social value; sustainable procurement; and corporate social responsibility. Other focus areas include biodiversity; circular economy; equality, diversity and inclusion; and corporate governance.

The role will also be expected to:

  • Provide sustainability advice, guidance and support to colleagues in the preparation of bids and delivery of projects, with a focus on contracted environment and social sustainability requirements.

These responsibilities will be achieved through:

  • Close collaboration with key functional teams (e.g.: environment; procurement; human resources; safety; health & wellbeing; engineering; project management) along with sustainability counterparts in client businesses; other contractor organisations; supply chain partners and external stakeholders. This collaboration will enable support for the:
  • preparation of specific documentation (procedures, management plans, etc)
  • development and delivery of training materials
  • collection of relevant data and progress reporting
  • attendance at and contribution to meetings
  • sharing of knowledge and lessons learnt.

What skills, experience and attributes are important for this job

  • Demonstrable professional experience and/or relevant degree, diploma or equivalent in related sustainability field (eg: environmental management, environmental engineering, supply chain management, social value, etc)
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of sustainability in a commercial environment encompassing economic, environment and social dimensions - ideally with specialist knowledge in one related field and general knowledge of others
  • Membership of a relevant professional organisation (eg: IEMA, CIWEM, IES, GACSO) and actively engaged in continuing professional development (CPD) activities
  • Ideally experience in the construction, manufacturing or rail industries but this is not essential
  • Willingness to work in both an office and site-based environment
  • Excellent communication, influencing and interpersonal skills
