Position Overview

 

Siemens Healthcare Laboratory (SHL), in Berkeley, California, is part of our new Center for Innovation in Diagnostics (CID). Our vision at SHL is to save lives by rapidly moving new in vitro diagnostic technologies and assays into clinical use.

 

Our mission within SHL R&D is to develop laboratory tests to support a new generation of therapies that will improve patient care in ways never before possible.

 

In order to achieve these goals, we will fully utilize decades of assay development experience, our clinical laboratory, and the unique resources available through our global diagnostics innovation organization.

 

Responsibilities

 

This Senior Scientist, reporting to the Head of R&D and Technology, will lead successful research and development programs, including those in companion or complementary diagnostics.

This scientist will be responsible for discovery, prototyping, optimization, and performance verification of new assays and technologies, as well as documentation and transfer of assays to either the clinical laboratory for validation as a Laboratory Developed Tests (LDT) or to other units of Siemens Diagnostics for development as In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) products.

 

Leading project teams, training and mentoring junior scientists, solving complex challenges, maintaining laboratory infrastructure, and effective technical communications are all key responsibilities.

 

The successful candidate will also support pharmaceutical industry partnering proposals, generate leads for new business opportunities, and be responsible for both internal and external scientific collaborations.

 

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

 

This position is for a non-entry level scientist with diagnostics industry and/or clinical laboratory experience. Well established expertise in assay development is required. 

Key skills include a background in immunoassay development, with a particular emphasis on assay prototyping, optimization, performance verification and validation, control system design and implementation, and documentation experience in a regulated healthcare environment.

Areas of specialization in infectious disease, oncology, and neurology are all applicable.

Additional expertise in biomarker discovery, antibody development, conjugation chemistry, protein purification, proteomics, and mass-spectrometry are also of interest.

Effective communications skills are critical. Scientist will interface with other departments and functions throughout the organization and externally. Establishing and maintaining relationships with business partners, interactions with suppliers, and coordinating academic or clinical collaborations are also important skills.

A working knowledge of precision medicine, selection of patients for therapy, optimizing dosage, monitoring response, or safety testing is an advantage.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

 

Previous work in IVD product development as a member of a product development core team is preferred.

 

Approximately 10% travel may be required.

 

B.S. or advanced degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, analytical chemistry, or related discipline is required. At least 5 years of relevant experience is required and typically requires more.  Also typically requires advanced education. An advanced degree with post‐doctoral work may substitute for a portion of required working experience in the IVD or clinical laboratory industry.
