Intern – Control and Simulation of Power Electronics-Dominated Power Systems

Join our research group Autonomous Systems and Control located in Princeton, NJ, for a 3 – 9-month internship and investigate, simulate, and prototype new control functions for smart inverters. You will be involved in active research which addresses the challenges of 100% renewable integration.

The Challenge

  • You will contribute to industrial research projects on control and simulation for smart grids with high renewable integration
  • You will collaborate and exchange ideas with experts in the fields of control systems and power systems
  • You will develop and implement innovative smart grid concepts and solutions, i.e., smart inverter models and control algorithms, in simulation.
  • You will test and validate these solutions with power electronics hardware in laboratory and field tests.

The Candidate

Qualified candidates will have/be:

  • A current student pursuing a MS/PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or related fields
  • Experience in modeling and control of power systems and power electronics
  • Expertise in modeling, control and simulation of power converters including multiphase DC-AC, AC-DC and DC-DC converters using MATLAB/SIMULINK
  • Experience with digital real-time simulators. Experience with OPAL-RT is a plus
  • Experience with motor modeling and control is a plus
  • Good programming knowledge in MATLAB and C++, e.g. writing reusable code
  • Ability to work independently and apply creative thinking strategies for problem solving
  • Excellent team working and communication (verbal & written) skills in English
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in a growing, dynamic, interdisciplinary team of experts.
  • This position requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless they are granted a medical or religious exemption
