A great opportunity has arisen for a Hardware Engineer to join our Development team within the Siemens Mobility Limited, Rail Infrastructure, Mobile Communications business in Poole.

Our Team and what we do:

The Mobile Communications business supplies on-board GSM-R equipment and other engineering solutions to rail industry operators and suppliers worldwide. This includes the GSM-R cab radio with GPS and 4G connectivity and the GSM-R data radio. We have earned a respected reputation in the industry which has developed as a result of our success in delivering to our customers. In addition, we are leading the way within the railway industry in developing the next generation of rail communications (Future Railway Mobile Communication System), based on 4G and 5G technology, so this is a great time to join the business in the development of a new, exciting technology!

Your role, and what you’ll be doing:

Working with the Hardware Development team leader, this role will design, implement, maintain, enhance, test, and support electronic systems. Mobile Comms offers the opportunity to follow product development through the entire life cycle from concept, through to design and manufacture and then in field support.

On occasions, you provide technical support to other teams including the mechanical drawing office, Sales, Projects, Test and Production. You will also be involved in demonstrations and trials of new products to internal stakeholders and customers.

What will be my Responsibilities?

  • Support the hardware engineering team in completing hardware engineering work package(s). Each work package will be defined in terms of budget, timescales and scope. This may include technical management of subcontractors.
  • Design electronics at both sub-system and PCB level as well and take those designs through the full life cycle culminating in supporting them when they are in the field.
  • You will take those systems through full type approval process including EMC and Environmental testing which is normally carried out at UKAS accredited test houses in the South of England.
  • Undertake systems engineering responsibilities including provision of accurate and timely technical and engineering input to projects and bids. You will be capable of contributing in a hands-on manner to all phases of an engineering project; including systems analysis and design, implementation, validation and test, and engineering support to site commissioning.
  • Manage the creation of BOMs (Bill of Materials) in our SAP system and preparation of products for building in one of Siemens factories.
  • As required, assist with sales engineering responsibilities, including provision of technical and engineering solutions for bids and tenders and effectively deal well with customers and suppliers when required.
  • Collaborate with other teams such as estimating costs and project planning. You will then be responsible for achieving budgets, timescale, quality and performance targets.

What Skills, Qualifications and Experience do I need?


  • HND, Degree or Equivalent in a relevant engineering subject area
  • Experience in developing electronic systems
  • Experience of designing at a PCB level and enter into CAD (with appropriate training on use of CAD software)
  • Experience of working at all aspects of a product life cycle including, requirements management, design, testing and production.
  • Ability to test and fault find at PCB and sub-system level
  • Ability to take products out to independent test houses and resolve issues (with the support of the team) to achieve type approval of products.
  • Support the mechanical engineering teams to produce products
  • Ability to work with the software engineering teams to assist in hardware/software integration
  • Full UK driving license


  • Experience of, or interest in, developing systems for the onboard train market
  • Knowledge or experience in EMC specifications EN50121-3-2/EN301489 series, Safety standard EN623681 and Environmental standard EN50155
  • Knowledge of GSM, GSM-R, 4G or 5G
  • Knowledge of CE marking and awareness of the emergence of the UK CA mark
  • Rail industry experience.
