Technical Writer (Industrial Automation)

Job Description

The position is an individual contributor reporting to the head of the information management team.  

 
Responsibilities:
 
The candidate will be responsible for the development and productization of user information in various forms including help systems, manuals, product information bulletins, and the preparation of information for posting to the Siemens support web pages.  In addition, the candidate will work extensively with key stakeholders in the development and review of the information including development, test, and product management.  

Details of specific job tasks and functions include:
o Develop User Documentation Concept documents describing the documentation deliverables
o Research technical and engineering information including drawings, design and test specifications, product prototypes, and other technical material to gain understanding of product to be documented
o Investigate and use complex product features and then describe their operation from a user perspective in written and/or graphical form
o Conduct interviews with subject matter experts to obtain information concerning product functionality
o Work within defined R&D process, providing deliverables as required by the process, per the agreed upon schedule

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:

o Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Technical Communications or in a technical field with demonstrated technical writing skills
o 5+ years’ experience working in a technical communications field
o 10% or less travel
o Experience with Industrial Control Systems used in discrete or process automation
o Experience with topic-based authoring
o Demonstrated proficiency in the writing and editing of technical documentation for products (user manuals, help systems, product information, and related technical support information) 
o Ability to integrate learning from one project into the next, especially with respect to product knowledge, editors, and tools
o Excellent interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills
o Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:

o 2 – 3 years’ experience with basic industrial control programming languages (e.g. ladder logic), HMI (Human Machine Interface) configuration, and industrial protocols (e.g. PROFINET)
o 1-2 years’ experience in editing documentation to remove cultural irritations, facilitate translation, adhere to style guides, or meet legal requirements
o Knowledge of the operation of Industrial Control Systems (Programmable Logic Controllers, Operator Interfaces, Input / Output Modules, Programming and Configuration software). 
o Able to create or modify graphics for incorporation into the documentation (manuals, help systems, etc.) as required
o Able to set up and capture screen shots of configurations and settings using the product software and incorporate into the documentation (manuals, help systems, etc.) as required
o Familiar with the use of technical communications tools, for example, Adobe Illustrator, screen capture tools, Adobe Acrobat DC, Microsoft Word, SmartGit, and others
o Comfortable around digital technology, able to rapidly learn new software tools
