6-12 Month Internship - Software Architecture / Software Engineering - Lightweight Sandboxing for Industrial Applications

Job Description

We are seeking interns to join our Architecture & Verification of Intelligent Systems research group! The right person has a strong background in software engineering and software architecture, is motivated to work with industrial use cases across industries and driven to make a difference.

The Challenge:

This person will be mentored by an experienced Software Architect and will collaborate with him / support him to:

  • Liaise with business units, and researchers across Siemens Technology globally to understand the industrial use case requirements for lightweight software sandboxing, and the existing research which has been conducted.
  • Design experiments to replicate the requirements from business units and provide reports on the differences between different software sandboxing techniques. Including exploring WebAssembly and other techniques.
  • Design and implement a prototype for a new system level software architecture to support industrial use cases, including seamless software upgrades and state migration.
  • Create publications and presentations for journals and conferences.
  • Support the technical direction of Siemens within the Bytecode Alliance, WebAssembly standard body. 
Candidate:

Qualified candidates will have:

  • BSc in Computer Science or related field and an ongoing MSc in Computer Science studies.
  • Concrete experience in systematic software engineering; contributions to open-source projects or student projects would be preferred.
  • Strong, hands-on coding experience for compiled (e.g., C++, C#, Java) languages.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes and container orchestration technology.
  • Experience with RTOS, microcontrollers and low-level system development a bonus.
  • Experience with Hypervisors and virtual machines, creating Unikernels would be a benefit.
  • Knowledge of WebAssembly would also beneficial.
  • Excellent communication skills and a proactive, curious, and independent work attitude and personality.
  • This position requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless they are granted a medical or religious exemption

May consider sponsorship of short-term J-1 visa students (6-12 months), dependent upon program requirements
