Electrical Power Systems Engineer

Job Description

Siemens Industry, Inc. is seeking an Electrical Power Systems Engineer to support project development activities for its Distributed Energy Systems (“DES”) group. This person will be responsible for seeking and supporting customer efforts by developing (or contributing to the development of) solutions that build business value using existing and emerging distributed energy technologies. The successful candidate will possess deep industry expertise that will be utilized through work on matrix teams.

This position will report to the Project Development Manager U.S. Distributed Energy Systems (DES), which is an organization within Siemens working to position Siemens as the preferred solutions provider for DES.  

Job Responsibilities:

This position performs and/or leads electrical and engineering work related to the application planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of distributed energy systems and related technology solutions. It leads (as project engineer when needed) or participates in teams working on emerging technologies associated with distributed generation of various renewable fuels (solar, cogeneration, etc.); battery energy storage; grid interface technologies and protocols; microgrids and other related approaches.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform power engineering analyses using applicable software and analytical tools.
  • Lead and manage feasibility studies and conceptual designs around distributed energy systems specifying major and balance of plant equipment for said designs
  • Develop budgetary cost estimates for equipment and turnkey construction of the relevant DES solution
  • Understand utility rates, regulations, demand response and grid ancillary services programs for behind the meter distributed energy applications
  • Establish performance specifications and application standards to be applied to electrical power systems for commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings.
  • Follow and communicate relevant technology trends, regulatory developments, and emerging business models; analyze key sector trends, trajectories, and developments.
  • Advise stakeholders on specifications and policy adoptions related to codes, standards and program design.
  • Work with sales and sales managers to develop capture plans and technical proposals
  • Mentors and supports technical teams and individuals with customer presentations, proposal development, and concept design 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s in electrical engineering (Power Systems preferred). MSEE preferred; other engineering degrees will be considered
  • Minimum 10 years of experience with electrical solutions such as, but not limited to, substation design, containerized electrical solutions, packaged inverters, LV and MV switchgear, MCCs, GSU and Aux Transformers, Protection Systems, Generators, ISO phase bus, generator breakers, UPS systems, bus ducts, panel boards, switchboards, VFDs, PLCs, Lithium Ion batteries, plant controls, SCADA and related equipment
  • Experience in electrical distribution engineering and applying grid code requirements for integration of solar PV, battery energy storage, , wind farms, microgrids, conventional and stand-by generation (including paralleling), and electric vehicles charging infrastructure.
  • Experience and demonstrated expertise with behind the meter or utility scale energy storage systems
  • Demonstrated self-starter and strong leader with sound judgement and ability to identify and develop solutions to complex electrical engineering problems. Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize, develop, and implement methods for technology improvements.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability coordinating the efforts of multi-discipline, multi-agency project teams to complete work.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to translate complex information for non-technical audiences.
