Principal Systems Engineer - ETCS Onboard

Job Description

Siemens Mobility does more than you know. You may associate us with trains or signalling systems. But, the advanced, AI powered transportation and mobility infrastructure we’re developing are actually a driving force for the future of smart cities – and an entirely digitalised world.

We blended traditional engineering with computer science long ago, and are leading the way in solutions that transform how people move. Green energy and decarbonisation is our goal, as is convenience and connecting with the individual – putting all the information relating to their journey in the palm of their hand.

An opportunity has arisen for a Principal Systems Engineer to join the Rolling Stock team based from Chippenham.

The Role

  • This role is for a Principle Systems Engineer, capable of technically leading and supporting the System Engineering tasks on the various ETCS On-board projects. The Principle Systems Engineer will play a lead role in Customer Requirements Management, management of the technical design risk, the definition of the System and Sub-system Design, and subsequent production of detailed Product Requirements for Project Teams to implement.

  • The jobholder will be capable of building and maintain strong communication links with Global R&D, the Project Delivery Teams, the Design Authority team, the Siemens design, fitment and approval partners and the client, and will be capable of interpreting and influencing their delivery strategy based on the needs of these stakeholders.
  • Success in the role will be measured primarily by the on-time delivery of allocated tasks meeting quality and budget targets as agreed with the Engineering Manager.  The Principle Systems Engineer will be expected to plan their own work within their overall agreed targets.
  • This role will help play a major part in delivering the ETCS on-board systems necessary as the business demands.  The role will focus on all parts of the lifecycle activities of the System Engineering process for all ETCS on-board projects.

Key Accountabilities
  • Will work closely with colleagues in the bids & tendering team, the engineering team members in the UK and Germany, project groups, the lines of business and heads of technology throughout Siemens, to ensure that the project systems solutions meet our customers’ needs now, and in the future.
  • Will work closely with the on-board train fitment design teams to ensure all project related system constraints are understood and implemented accordingly.
  • Provide key input and ideas to help determine the most appropriate technical, product and commercial solutions within the given geographical and technical environment.
  • Ensure innovation and value engineering is applied to all proposals.
  • A key player within the project organisation.

Specific Skills/Tasks
