Master Thesis Train Application

Job Description

If you really want to make a difference – make it with us

Siemens Mobility is a separately managed company of Siemens AG. As a leader in transport solutions for more than 160 years, Siemens Mobility is constantly innovating its portfolio in its core areas of rolling stock, rail automation and electrification, turnkey systems, intelligent traffic systems as well as related services. With digitalization, Siemens Mobility is enabling mobility operators worldwide to make infrastructure intelligent, increase value sustainably over the entire lifecycle, enhance passenger experience and guarantee availability. In fiscal year 2020, which ended on September 30, 2020, the former Siemens Mobility Division posted revenue of €9.1 billion and had around 38,500 employees worldwide.

Your new role – challenging and future-oriented

We are constantly looking for good content for our communication channels. This primarily includes images of our trains, which we then use for media banners, social media or even for our websites. We already have a large pool of our own images stored centrally in our "Digital Asset Management" tool. However, we are also interested in buying new images through portals like "Getty Images”, “Stockfotos" etc. These images usually have no description about the type of the train. Our trains, such as locomotives, light rail, metros, commuter trains or even high-speed trains often look similar in shape but are always branded differently by our customers. Only the expert can tell whether it is a Siemens Mobility train or not. We would like to change that. We would like to know how AI (Artificial Intelligence) can help us to find out whether the pictures are of a Siemens Mobility train or not, without having to constantly consult our network of experts.

  • Your task is to develop a "face app" for trains that can evaluate images in seconds. The app recognizes whether the train is a Siemens train or not and ideally indicates what type of train it is.
  • You are responsible to test the application. For this, you will receive a pool of images of trains to feed the AI machine.
  • Additionally, we offer you a network of experts in the field of mobility and a supervisor from the innovation team to accompany you.

Your qualifications – solid and appropriate

  • You are studying Computer Science, Software Engineering or Artificial Intelligence and are interested in writing your master thesis with us.
  • You are familiar with Computer Vision, Deep Learning, Supervised/Unsupervised learning.
  • You have experience with Object Oriented Programming.
  • You are familiar with Python, Pytorch / Tensorflow, OpenCV and web development tools.
  • You are motivated to further research about CNN architectures, Vision Transformers etc.

Have we sparked your interest? Then contact us with a short application incl. your location, your university and course, the date of your master thesis submission and with first ideas for the app or for programming.
