Digital Services Energy Engineer - Smart Buildings - Austin, TX

Job Description

The Digital Service Engineer (DSE) is an integral part of development, implementation, and on-going support of Data Driven Services for Siemens SI. Our team is constantly growing and is looking for new hires in one of two DSE levels, based on certifications and years of experience.

The DSE performs, coordinates and/or leads the development and ongoing analysis of new building automation projects in the Digital Service Center (DSC). The DSC team provides fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) services to Siemens branches across North America. After project onboarding, the DSE monitors HVAC equipment performance and reports findings to the customer. Next, the DSE will coordinate with BMS or Mechanical specialists to resolve the identified faults at the customer’s building.

The DSC is located in Austin, Texas and applicants will be asked to relocate. Team members are only expected to be in the office 2 days a week. Fully remote positions are not being considered at this time.

Siemens Smart Infrastructure


  • BS in mechanical engineering or applicable technical degree
  • Certification:
    • Level II: CEM & Engineer in Training (EIT), EPM or PE required
    • Level III: CEM, EMP or PE required
  • Experience:
    • Level II: 4 - 8 years of energy management or HVAC systems design experience
    • Level III: 8+ years of energy management or HVAC system design experience, advanced degrees preferred
  • Effective communication skills to speak with c-level executives

  • Reviews building HVAC equipment performance using Fault Detection & Diagnostic tools to provides analysis
  • Identifies faults and root cause to suggest control changes to improve operational and energy efficiency
  • Becomes a subject matter expert of Facility Improvement Measures for HVAC systems
  • Compiles customer facing reports and list of action items for building improvement
  • Develops and effectively communicates to the customer long-term energy and sustainability strategies for standalone, campus and enterprise portfolios. Plans include operational and capital improvement recommendations.
  • Estimates project energy and operational cost savings
  • Studies customer’s building management system and mechanical design documents to select data points for analysis and to understand the existing operational intent
  • Collaborates with the Digital Service Specialist (DSS) during metering setup and point discovery
  • Identifies and select rules to be applied for FDD, taking into consideration the relationship and interdependency of multiple building systems and their equipment.
  • Develops project structure and equipment parent/child relationships for use by the DSS
  • Consults in the development of Digital Service Center Offerings
  • Presents Digital Service Center offerings to potential customers and ensures offerings and deliverables meet the customer’s needs

Ideal Traits:

  • Familiarity with HVAC system and building controls. Knowledge of common HVAC and electrical building codes
  • Understands components and operation methods of Air Handling Units, Water and Air-cooled Chillers, Cooling Towers, Boilers, Pumps, and Air/Water Distribution systems. Including physical and programmed components.
  • Ability to read and understand design documentation (drawings, sequences of operation, schedules etc.)
  • Familiarity with data logging equipment and trending capability building automation systems trending functions
  • Experience with building modeling programs or spreadsheet energy analyses
  • Experience with building retro-commissioning
  • Knowledge of facility and maintenance operations, capital planning, maintenance budgeting, maintenance best practices, and HVAC energy efficiency measures
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite programs, high level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Works independently with minimal supervision
  • Manages deliverable deadlines independently
  • Confident and self-motivated to learn new skills and software
  • Able to adjust communication style to work with a variety of roles and interested parties
  • Dresses professionally when necessary and comfortable working in a collaborative office environment
  • Proficient in French is a desirable quality, but not required
