Simcenter Madymo is the industry leading software for analyzing human safety. The Madymo Active Human Model (AHM) has been developed to simulate the behaviour of vehicle occupants during manoeuvring, and it is an important development in ensuring the safety of occupants, especially in autonomous vehicles.

Competitive driving situations push vehicle designers, drivers and restraint engineers to the limits of technology in achieving high performance. Safety is critical in such cases and vehicle design has to maximise safety while minimizing weight and bulk; this can be designed and ensured with the use of testing with anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs, or crash test dummies), and through numerical simulations.

This project aims to investigate the effect of seating position on the effectiveness of race-vehicle specialized restraint systems approved by the governing body, with the aim to maximize safety under high crash loads.  

This internship will be run with the SaCoMo (Safety and Comfort Modelling) group based in The Hague, Netherlands.

Scope

The aims of this internship are to carry out numerical simulations using multibody models of humans and ATDs with specialized restraint systems. The models will be correlated where applicable with experimental results. If time allows further studies can be planned and carried out to increase the robustness of the conclusions, and improvements to the modelling methodologies can be investigated.

This internship will be situated in the SaCoMo group based in The Hague, Netherlands.

Objectives

- Develop an understanding of multibody modelling and restraint design

- Review existing models and develop robust simulation plan

- Carry out simulations, review results, report to stakeholders

Requirements

The modelling will need to meet the standards set by the SaCoMo team’s internal quality requirements, and will be reviewed by a domain expert to ensure the quality of the solution against industrial and academic standards. Results will be presented to various stakeholders, requiring strong communication skills on a technical and non-technical level
