The IoT engineering group is composed of several global teams who work together across hardware, firmware, manufacturing, software, and integrations to produce products and services for smart buildings in many customer verticals. These solutions include our industry-leading software-defined lighting solution (Enlighted), space occupancy / utilisation data, real-time indoor location tracking, wayfinding, etc.

Our embedded software group is responsible for designing, implementing, and delivering firmware deployed to a wide array of devices including our industry-leading smart lighting control sensors, gateways, and edge computing device. Our sensors combine small form-factor, advanced wireless networking, and sensing capabilities. Acting as the heart of our IoT platform, they empower buildings with real-time environmental telemetry, asset tracking and tremendous energy cost reduction while ensuring occupants safety and comfort. The sensor network is supported by our gateway and edge computing device facilitating driving our sensor network data to the cloud and satisfying low latency real-time data processing needs of our customers respectively.

The embedded software team continuously strives for excellence and is very agile in nature to tackle the challenges of building new features or to support our existing deployments spanning 410+ million square feet of commercial real estate globally.

  About the role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our team in the Kitchener, ON office. The software team develops cutting edge sensing and processing units combined with our smart building platform helps reduce energy usage and increase operational efficiency. Our platform is installed in over 410 million square feet of commercial real estate across 31 countries. This role entails significant ownership of our world class firmware design, ranging from architecture, implementation, validation, and full life cycle ownership.

    What You Will Do  
  • Deliver high-quality python code to run in a containerize environment.
  • Integrate new devices (sensors, gateway, etc.), implement, and debug features.
  • Architect, design, test and integrate firmware features targeted for IoT devices built for high volume manufacturing.
  • Hands-on hardware bring-up, system debugging and code optimization.
  • Develop, enhance, and debug new and existing real-time firmware components and features in C.
  • Make performance and optimization trade-offs to meet product requirements.
  • Provide hardware/firmware support and design input as required to Cloud/UI Designers and others.
  • Build edge computing modules and integrate them effectively to achieve real-time requirements.
  • Support continuous integration and code quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provide support for Data Science team in the effective and accurate collection of data from Enlighted's systems
  • Identify opportunities for system improvements that can enhance the operation of the entire end-to-end system
  • Work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team spanning hardware, software, cloud development and product management.
  • Improve customer experience, continually raising the bar on functionality, usability, and simplicity.
  Your Skills and Experience  
  • BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or proof of exceptional skills in related fields with practical software engineering experience
  • 5+ years of industry experience developing large-scale applications in either the backend or the frontend
  • Proficiency with Python programming, C language
  • Understanding of TCP/IP Socket Programming
  • Good knowledge on TLS, SSL
  • Good knowledge of RESTful standards and best practices
  • Deep knowledge of Javascript/HTML/CSS and at least one major web framework (React, Vue, Angular)
  • Experience incremental delivery of enterprise systems with CI/CD
  • Working knowledge of agile process in a software and firmware setup.
  • Experience working in an IoT and/or SaaS business with many hardware and software components distributed across a variety of environments and with varied deployment types.
  • Ability to demonstrate experience in development of embedded products in high volumes involving microcontrollers running FreeRTOS™ or any other real-time operating system.
  • Test driven development and familiarity with developer driven automated testing.
  • Remain engaged, proactive, and positive while solving very challenging problems.
  • Experience with Linux, embedded Linux
  • Proactive business skills and strong collaborative skills are required.
  Bonus Points For
  • Experience with driver level programming, strong knowledge of microcontroller to hardware interfacing requirements and implementation in firmware, such as: BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy), Wi-fi, Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), A/D (Analog-to-Digital) inputs, and Wireless
  • Have developed automated continuous integration tests for hardware and software components.
  • Familiarity with embedded development tools
  • Formal software and/or hardware engineering experience is a substantial asset to help the team develop internal tools and automations for continuous integration testing of our IoT system.
  • Linux command line and administration experience is very helpful for accessing and configuring our devices and services.
