Research Intern Structural Health Monitoring  - Strategic Student Program

Based: Hybrid. Rome, Italy - Internship 6 months – Possibility of extension.

Siemens Digital Industries Software is a leading provider of solutions for the design, simulation, and manufacture of products across many different industries. Formula 1 cars, skyscrapers, ships, space exploration vehicles, and many of the objects we see in our daily lives are being conceived and manufactured using our Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software.

Position Overview:

In recent years, the growing complexity of engineering systems and the push for more efficient maintenance have led to increased interest in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) across sectors like wind energy, aerospace, and civil infrastructure. As these systems operate under more variable and demanding conditions, the ability to detect structural damage early has become essential for ensuring safety and reducing both downtime and costs. In this scenario, data-driven methods have gained significant attention. By relying directly on sensor data, they offer a practical and adaptable approach to monitoring the condition of a wide variety of structures.

This project is dedicated to developing and validating advanced signal processing algorithms for damage detection, using both simulated and experimental data. Our aim is to rigorously evaluate how well these approaches perform under different damage scenarios and operational conditions. Ultimately, the goal is to embed these algorithms within an automated monitoring workflow, making full use of Simcenter Testlab Workflow Automation (TWA) to streamline and enhance the entire process.

Responsibilities:

  • The activities foreseen in this work include:
  • Generate simulated operational data representing damaged conditions for a small-scale wind turbine using the existing flexible multibody model.
  • Use this dataset to validate damage detection methods across various operating scenarios.
  • Test and validate these approaches with experimental data.
  • Streamline and automate the entire workflow by leveraging Simcenter Testlab Workflow Automation (TWA).

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:

  • You are currently pursuing a master's degree in mechanical engineering, or a related field, in Italy.
  • You have good knowledge of modal analysis, FE and multibody analysis, MATLAB.Python is considered a plus.
  • Your interpersonal and communication skills, in English, enable effective collaboration within the team.

Additional Information:

The Strategic Student Program is our formal internship program at Siemens Digital Industries Software globally. You will be mentored by experts and again invaluable professional experience. At Siemens, SSP interns get access to an international student network and community, career development opportunities with professional growth pathways, comprehensive practical training throughout the program, access to the Siemens Learning Hub and other training materials, and the opportunity to work on exciting projects within a global, diverse team.

The Siemens Strategic Student Program (SSP) in Italy offers a full-time (40 hours per week) or part-time (25 hours per week) paid internship. Based in Rome, Italy, the program follows a hybrid work model and runs for six months, starting from February.  To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled at an Italian university for the entire duration of the program, including both Italian and international students. Both curricular and extracurricular internships are accepted.
