Siemens Smart Infrastructure is looking for qualified candidates for our Protection & Automation Technician Development Program beginning in January 2026.
This program is based in Wendell, NC. The Electrification and Automation division in Wendell, NC supports our portfolio of protection and automation products and solutions. A variety of opportunities are available across the business supporting project design tasks, operations, product development, special projects and process improvements.
Our Protection & Automation Technician Internship Program offers hands-on experience inside our Panel Assembly Workshop (PA PAWS) in Wendell, NC - where our Siemens SIPANELSs, Industrial Control Panels (ICPs) are built to power the control systems that protect and automate electrical substations.
Throughout the 12-month program, you’ll gain exposure to each phase:
Phase 1 – Assembly Foundations
- Identify and assemble mechanical and electrical components of Industrial Control Panels.
 - Learn wire cutting and crimping techniques for high-quality electrical connections.
 - Interpret 3D models and schematic diagrams to route wiring efficiently.
 - Learn Siemens safety standards, quality processes, and product fundamentals.
 
Phase 2 – Quality Testing & Verification
- Inspect and test completed panels prior to shipment.
 - Gain hands-on experience with electrical safety, wire routing and dressing best practices, fiber optic termination and testing, and Ethernet communication testing.
 - Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) with customers, ensuring panels meet design and operational standards.
 
Phase 3 – Protection Relay Technician Rotation
- Receive and inspect protective relays arriving from Siemens Germany.
 - Load firmware and customer-specific software configurations.
 - Perform bench testing and final verification before delivery.
 
Phase 4 – Relay Technician Field Service Rotation
- Work side-by-side with Siemens lead engineers at real electrical substations across the U.S.
 - Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) for live customer projects.
 - Gain invaluable real-world experience supporting Siemens Protection & Automation solutions in the field.
 
Throughout the program, participants receive continuous mentorship and exposure to real Siemens projects serving utilities, data centers, and renewable microgrids.
Program Completion and Career Path
At the conclusion of the PA TDP, participants—based on performance and personal interests, may:
- Select their preferred technical area to continue contributing long-term (e.g., Assembly, Quality Testing, or Field Service).
 - Serve as mentors for incoming PA TDP cohorts, guiding future generations of Siemens technicians.
 - Pursue a 4-year Engineering degree, supported through Siemens’ Tuition Reimbursement Program, enabling continued education and professional growth while remaining part of the Siemens team.
 
You’ll win us over by having the following qualifications:
- Completed Associates Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Systems Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, or related program.
 - Full-time availability begins January 26th, 2026.
 - Interested in learning how power systems, protection relays, and automation panels work together.
 - Demonstrated attention to detail, teamwork, and commitment to safety.
 - Proficiency in English, including reading, writing, and speaking.
 - Must be able to lift parts or sub-assemblies weighing up to 50 lbs occasionally.
 - Applicants must be legally authorized for employment within the United States without the need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization.

The pay range for this position is 25.00 per hour. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications and premium geographic location.
