Position Overview:
Reporting to the Head of Materials Management, Material Planning Manager is responsible for overseeing end‑to‑end material planning activities to ensure consistent availability of materials that support production, operations, and customer delivery requirements. This role provides leadership to material planners, drives inventory accuracy, optimizes planning processes, and collaborates closely with Production, Procurement, Warehouse and other Materials Management teams to meet service, cost, and quality targets. The position also ensures compliance with established Materials Management policies and guidelines and drives the adoption of improved processes when necessary.
What your day may look like:
- Lead and develop a team of Material Planners, ensuring effective workload prioritization, performance management, coaching, and career development planning.
- Maximize on‑time material availability across all projects by proactively monitoring MRP signals, supplier confirmations, and production requirements.
- Drive on‑time supplier purchase order confirmations and establish clear communication standards for updates, issue escalation, and resolution with internal teams and suppliers.
- Review and adjust material schedules by working closely with planners to execute pull-ins, push-outs, and cancellations to support changing enterprise and project needs.
- Identify material risks early through detailed analysis of MRP outputs, project schedules, and inventory status, ensuring timely corrective action to prevent shortages.
- Lead digital transformation projects, including robotic process automation and AI-driven solutions.
- Develop, maintain, and distribute standard reporting that provides clear visibility into material status, shortages, KPIs, supplier performance, and overall planning execution.
- Collaborate cross‑functionally with Strategic Purchasing, Enterprise Scheduling, Manufacturing, Warehouse, Accounting, Receiving, Inspection, and Project Management to resolve issues and support successful project execution.
- Ensure timely resolution of receiving, invoicing, and quality discrepancies, working with cross‑functional stakeholders and suppliers to maintain material accuracy and flow.
- Support leadership with special projects, data-driven analysis, and ad‑hoc reporting, continually improving planning discipline, internal processes, and department performance.
What you will need to be successful in this role:
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain, Business, Operations, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Strong technical knowledge and understanding of materials management, strategic procurement, production, inventory and process control.
- Key user level experience in SAP ERP.
- 5+ years of experience in an engineer-to-order manufacturing environment or in a supply chain field.
- High-level leadership and decision-making skills.
- Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
- A strong sense of urgency and drive.
- Ability to work well under pressure, manage competing demands and meet tight deadlines with strong follow-through.
- Ability to lead others to solve complex problems and use sophisticated analytical thinking to exercise judgment and identify innovative solutions.
- Highly skilled at building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders.
We would be impressed if you had:
- Experience in Rail Manufacturing or heavy manufacturing of capital equipment.
- Master’s degree in supply chain, Business, Operations, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- CPIM or equivalent advanced supply chain certification.
- 2+ years leadership managing a team or as an individual contributor manager.

This position in located in Sacramento, CA. The salary range for this position is $100,266- $130,000 and the local incentive target is 5% of the base salary. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications and premium geographic location.

The pay range for this position is $100,266.00 - $130,000.00 annually with a target incentive of 5% Local Bonus of the base salary. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location.
