Industrial Control Systems Research Intern

In this role you will work remotely from a home office.

We are seeking a motivated, talented, and self-driven Industrial Control Systems (ICS) Research Intern focused on Industrial Cybersecurity to join our research team. An ideal candidate will have a strong background in programming and configuring basic industrial devices such as PLCs and HMIs. The intern will work closely with experienced researchers and engineers to support cutting-edge projects aimed at demonstrating impact with respect to misconfigurations in ICS networks and necessary controls associated with preventing ICS attacks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • ICS Testbed and Cyber Scenario Creation and Configuration:
    • Assist in configuration and programming of industrial devices to replicate a near realistic industrial process
    • Investigate and create cybersecurity attacks within the configured testbed to assist with training of various cybersecurity models
  • Development of Training and Testing Environments:
    • Assist with the creation of automated controls (both attack and defense) as part of a training environment for cybersecurity models
    • Assist with the development of model training and testing environments
    • Accommodate integration of said environments into a broader platform

  • Collaboration and Reporting:
    • Work alongside a multidisciplinary team of researchers to brainstorm and develop innovative solutions
    • Prepare and present progress reports, technical documentation, and research papers to internal and external stakeholders
  • Publication of Results:
    • Publish the results generated from the research and experiments as part of a Conference and/or Journal.

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:

  • Currently enrolled full-time in a PhD or MSc program in cybersecurity, computer science, engineering, artificial intelligence, or other from an accredited university in the United States
  • Experience with industrial control systems such as PLCs, HMIs, and engineering software.
  • Basic experience writing Ladder Logic, Function Block Diagram (FBD), Structured Control Language (SCL), Sequential Function Charts (SFC), Structured text, etc. is highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, Git, Jira, and other professional software development tools and workflows.
  • Experience with vulnerability analysis, software security, or AI applications in cybersecurity is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to think critically, solve problems, and work independently.
  • Strong programming and fast prototyping skills.
  • Strong understanding of industrial control systems.

The pay range for this position is $32-$47 per hour. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications and premium geographic location.
