Transform the everyday with us!
We’re looking for a Head of R&D to lead a transformation of our Electrification & Automation (EA) R&D organization in the U.S. You will energize a high‑performing engineering culture, accelerate product/platform innovation (hardware, firmware, software), and embed advanced simulation and AI‑enabled development practices. This position is based on‑site in the Raleigh/Wendell, NC area, partnering closely with EA leadership, PLM, Product Strategy, Sales, Manufacturing, and global R&D counterparts.
You’ll make a difference by:
- Leading an innovation‑led, AI‑enabled transformation of EA R&D—moving from maintenance‑heavy work to rapid concepting, iterative releases, and modern engineering workflows.
- Embedding advanced simulation (and digital engineering tools) to shorten design cycles, reduce permutations, and improve confidence before lab builds and field validation.
- Building & scaling teams—hiring top talent, coaching, and establishing a culture of accountability, curiosity, and entrepreneurial drive that increases patent generation and thought leadership.
- Orchestrating value streams across medium‑voltage protection & automation portfolios; aligning with PLM and Product Strategy on roadmaps and delivering high‑quality releases on time.
- Driving compliance & safety—owning standards, design controls, and data‑driven quality decisions (recalls/mitigations), while strengthening process discipline.
- Contributing to M&A and portfolio expansion—supporting technical due‑diligence, integration planning, and knowledge transfer for acquired technologies and teams.
- Acting as an executive interface—engaging internal stakeholders, customers, and partners; representing EA R&D in leadership forums and multi‑function initiatives.
You’ll win us over by having the following qualifications:
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Electrical, Mechanical, or related Engineering field.
- 10+ years progressive R&D experience and 3–5+ years leading R&D teams delivering complex products/platforms.
- Domain experience in medium‑voltage power distribution (e.g., switchgear, circuit protection, digital substation), with strong grasp of standards and test methods.
- Hands‑on leadership applying advanced simulation and AI/ML‑enabled design within product development cycles.
- Proven cross‑functional collaboration with PLM, Product Strategy, Sales, and Manufacturing; track record of release discipline and process excellence.
- Ability to work on‑site in the Raleigh/Wendell, NC area; willingness to travel to labs, customer centers, and manufacturing sites as needed.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States on a continual basis; relocation assistance may be available.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (M.S./Ph.D.) in Electrical/Power Systems, Mechatronics, or related fields.
- Experience building high‑performing teams in fast‑paced tech environments and integrating modern development practices at scale.
- Demonstrated patent portfolio or recognized thought leadership (journals, standards, conferences).
- Experience in M&A technical due‑diligence and integration (portfolio adds, joint ventures), partnering with corporate teams.
- Global/matrix leadership in multinational organizations; comfort with ambiguity and change leadership.
