Solution Engineer Crane Automation

Introduction

As a Solution Engineer at Siemens Cranes, you will be involved in every phase of the development of advanced crane automation solutions.

Role description
As a Solution Engineer, you are one of the automation specialists within the Cranes department. You work on sophisticated, long-term projects that combine software development, PLC programming and system integration. Together with international colleagues, you design, program, test and commission automation solutions for harbor cranes. Development and design take place in the Netherlands and Germany, followed by pre-commissioning in China and final commissioning at customer sites worldwide. You are encouraged to take ownership of your work and actively contribute to improving engineering standards and methodologies.

A typical day starts with a stand-up meeting. You collaborate with colleagues on PLC programming challenges, test software against simulators and validate functionality. Findings are documented and shared via Jira, ensuring transparency and continuous improvement.

Your responsibilities

• Designing and preparing integrated automation and software solutions in line with project requirements
• Programming, testing and validating PLC software and automation workflows
• Performing functional, integration and acceptance tests together with customers
• Actively contributing to the development of automation solutions for harbor cranes
• Selecting suitable products, components and systems and defining their characteristics
• Tracking, documenting and evaluating development and build progress

Your profile

• A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering or a related technical field
• Experience or strong knowledge of industrial automation environments
• Structured troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills
• Proven experience with TIA Portal
• Ability to write clear and concise technical documentation
• Professional proficiency in English
• Willingness to travel internationally (approximately two periods of four weeks per year)

You have an advantage if you also have

• Experience with industrial networks such as Profinet, TCP/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, RS485 or OPC
• Knowledge of container terminals or container cranes
• Understanding of the influence of software on machine behavior
• Experience with ST programming languages such as TIA Portal SCL
• Knowledge of laser or camera systems
• Experience with modelling languages such as UML or SysML
• Experience with state-based control systems
• Software development experience in production lines or storage systems
