Research and Development Engineer Real-time Systems - Model Based System Testing
We are Siemens
Siemens Digital Industries Software is a leading provider of solutions for the design, simulation, and manufacture of products across many different industries. Formula 1 cars, skyscrapers, ships, space exploration vehicles, and many of the objects we see in our daily lives are being conceived and manufactured using our software.
We’re hiring a Research and Development Engineer – Real-time Systems for Simulation and Control to develop cutting-edge real-time solutions for model-based bench testing of automotive and aerospace components.
These solutions support a wide range of markets, including electric vehicles and autonomous driving.
In this role, the focus is on researching, designing, and implementing advanced techniques for physical and virtual testing, as well as distributed bench testing. The work spans the full testing lifecycle, following established methodologies such as Model-in-the-Loop, Software-in-the-Loop, Hardware-in-the-Loop, System-in-the-Loop, and field testing. This includes exploring, developing, deploying, and validating state-of-the-art co-simulation and control algorithms, along with real-time communication techniques, and applying them to real-world industrial use cases. All developed control algorithms are ultimately interfaced with physical inputs and outputs or industrial field buses.
The role actively contributes to Research & Development activities in the field of Model-Based System Testing (MBST). This includes supporting ongoing research projects, preparing research deliverables, and contributing to the development and evolution of MBST products through both hands-on development and research. It also involves transferring technical knowledge to other MBST team members and, where applicable, supervising students engaged in technology exploration for future MBST solutions.
The position makes a direct impact by driving the development and productization of MBST real-time solutions in close collaboration with Product and Research Management. Responsibilities include researching, developing, deploying, and validating advanced techniques for physical and virtual testing, as well as distributed bench testing, including real-time co-simulation and control algorithms. These techniques are applied and evaluated across a wide range of industrial use cases and customer applications to ensure technical robustness and real-world relevance.
Support for MBST product visibility and adoption is provided through the preparation of technical articles for industrial publications, alongside continuous monitoring of emerging technologies and market trends to fuel innovation within the MBST portfolio. In close cooperation with Product and Research Management, the role contributes to research activities related to MBST real-time solutions, including the preparation and demonstration of internal and external research deliverables and participation in the development, implementation, and delivery of research project use cases.
In addition, the position plays an active role in advancing MBST research dissemination through peer-reviewed scientific publications, international conferences, and European research projects, while helping shape the evolution of advanced and novel applications of real-time solutions.
Your success is grounded in:
· A Master’s degree in Mechatronics, Mechanics, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field; a PhD or equivalent research experience is considered a strong asset.
· The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, with a structured, accurate, and results-driven mindset, and a willingness to learn quickly.
· Hands-on experience with engineering activities such as co-simulation, control algorithm development, system-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, and hybrid testing approaches.
· Experience or solid knowledge in developing real-time applications, including embedded real-time operating systems and real-time drivers.
· Familiarity with simulation tools (e.g. multibody or multiphysics simulation software), which is considered an advantage.
· Understanding of digital communication buses, such as CAN and real-time field buses (e.g. EtherCAT, PROFINET), is a plus.
· Proficiency in programming languages such as C/C++ and Python; experience with additional languages is an asset.
· Exposure to numerical computing on both conventional and heterogeneous computing platforms is advantageous.
· Fluency in English (spoken and written); knowledge of Dutch, French, or German is viewed as an advantage.
Please note that for this position we are looking to hire in Leuven - Belgium. Office attendence is mandatory.
