AI & Privacy Enhancing Techniques Internship
We are looking for creative minds! Are you in?
As part of our Brasov team we will help you build the foundation of your professional and personal development. During your time with us, you'll be able to see how digitalization works in the real world. Our program offers you the ideal start in your career and the chance to become our colleague at Siemens Romania R&D.
1) What you should know:
- Differences between centralized training and federated learning; roles such as clients, aggregators/servers, training rounds, and model updates.
- Basics of privacy and threat modeling: honest-but-curious vs malicious adversaries.
- Core privacy concepts: identifiability, membership disclosure, attribute inference, data leakage.
- The fundamental trade-off: privacy vs utility vs system performance.
2) What you should learn:
- Common attacks in federated/decentralized learning (i.e.):
- Membership inference - determining whether a sample was part of training.
- Attribute inference - inferring sensitive features from model updates.
- Gradient inversion / reconstruction attacks - recovering training data from gradients.
- Poisoning attacks.
- Fundamentals of Differential Privacy (DP).
- What Secure Aggregation and encryption protect -- and their limitations in the context of decentralized training.
3) What you should apply:
- Building reproducible experiments: fixed seeds, dependency control, configuration management, and experiment tracking.
- Evaluating model utility (accuracy, F1, AUC), convergence behavior, and the performance impact of privacy mechanisms.
- Running adversarial simulations, such as membership inference pipelines or gradient reconstruction attempts (when feasible).
- Ablation studies exploring how results change with the privacy enhancing layers.
This is a part-time, paid internship role available for students in Brasov, Romania.
