We are currently recruiting for a Environment and Sustainability Advisor to join our Rail Infrastructure business. You can work from Manchester or our York sites but may also require travelling to both.

Support the delivery of environment and environmental sustainability requirements in nominated regions or projects, including the development and implementation of related corporate workstreams where necessary. Example topic areas include: Environment - ecology, contaminated land, waste, water, pollution prevention, and Environmental Sustainability - sustainable procurement, community engagement, diversity and carbon.

You’ll make an impact by:

  • Facilitating the development of project‑specific environmental and sustainability documentation, ensuring alignment with legislation, business needs and client requirements. For example:-Environment and Sustainability Management Plans (ESMPs), Environment and Social Risk Assessments (ESRAs) and Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs).
  • Ensuring project teams plan effectively for environmental and social considerations, including all required permits, licences and consents.
  • Identifying and helping implement environmental and sustainability opportunities that enhance project performance and outcomes.
  • Managing and undertaking environmental inspections and audits across projects, offices, sites and depots.
  • Leading the technical response to environmental incident investigations, providing guidance and ensuring learning is captured.
  • Developing and delivering environmental and sustainability training to staff and contractors to build competence and awareness.

Your success will be grounded by:

  • Degree or diploma in environmental or relevant sustainability field
  • Membership of a relevant professional organisation (eg: ISEP)
  • Ability to prepare high quality written documentation
  • Experience in the development and/or delivery of environment and sustainability briefing materials
  • Actively engaged in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in an environmental or relevant sustainability field within the construction and/or rail industry Knowledge of railway maintenance techniques and procedures.
  • Demonstratable knowledge of railway systems including reading mechanical and electrical drawings, systematic fault finding and problem identification.
  • Ability to review, analyse, and interrogate technical reports
  • Ability to analyse train borne event and fault diagnostic systems

It would also be beneficial to have:

  • Willingness to provide guidance and constructive feedback to colleagues on environmental and relevant sustainability issues
  • Detailed knowledge of one or more specific environment topics (desirable)
  • Analytical techniques (5Whys, SWOT, Design Thinking etc)
  • The ability to provide leadership within a matrix organisation structure.
