Position Overview:  

The Mechanical Systems Engineer – Heavy Rail Vehicle Carbody Structure reports to the Carshell Calculations Engineering Manager. This is a full time, in person (not remote) role located in Sacramento, California. You will be the customer facing subject matter expert responsible for engineering activities involved in the design, analysis, and manufacture of passenger heavy rail vehicle carbody structures.

The primary objective of this role is to support the design, analysis, and manufacturing of passenger heavy rail vehicle carbody structures at all stages of the product life cycle. This includes supporting pre-bid and bid efforts through requirements management, technical proposal writing, material estimation and costing; project execution by writing design review documentation and CDRL’s, supporting and collaborating with internal interfacing partners (engineering, projects, procurement, production, etc.), conducting in-person design reviews with customers, and performing structural assessments of rail vehicle primary and secondary structure using a combination of manual and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) calculation methodologies against static and fatigue loads thoroughly documenting analysis work; during manufacturing by working closely with production and production engineering to provide support necessary including determining disposition of non-compliances and the course of any rework, if required; during the warranty and aftermarket phases by supporting accident repair and corrosion mediation efforts.

 
What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Collaborate with internal partners in the U.S. and Europe, including regular travel for training and project work.
  • Manage technical specification requirements and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare bid documentation and technical write-ups related to passenger heavy rail vehicle carbody structures.
  • Support procurement activities, including materials estimation and supplier communications.
  • Contribute directly to design packages by advising on material selection, weld details, and tolerancing for drawings.
  • Perform structural assessments of carbody interfaces and ensure full system integration.
  • Utilize 3D CAD and Finite Element Analysis for static and fatigue analyses of carbody structures.
  • Document analytical work in engineering reports and compile specifications, CDRLs, and design review documentation.
  • Act as subject matter expert in customer design meetings and support homologation and structural testing.
  • Mentor junior engineers, manage tasks independently, and ensure project schedules and deliverables are met.

To thrive in this role, you have:

  • BS degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering + 7 years of relevant experience; or MS degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering + 3 years of relevant experience; or PhD in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering + 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in the design and analysis of welded strictures subject to static and cyclic loads
  • Working knowledge of Finite Element analysis as applicable to structural design including static, quasi-static, dynamic, and fatigue assessment methodologies
  • In depth knowledge of material science and the applicability with structural analysis and welding
  • Experience with projects from start to finish of the bid, engineering, procurement, manufacturing, testing, operational, and warranty stages
  • Knowledge of the construction and manufacturing of passenger rail heavy rail vehicle structures
  • Knowledge of welding codes and their application to design, analysis, and manufacturing

What will make you stand out:

  • Rolling Stock Engineering experience and the vehicle platforms they are derived from.
  • Working knowledge of typical railway Light Rail and Heavy Rail design standards such as AAR Section M, APTA, PRIIA, FRA, and EN12663
  • Working knowledge of structural welding codes including AWS, EN15085, DVS1608 and 1612
  • PE License, Mechanical, Civil, or Structural
  • International Welding Engineer (IWE) certification
  • Experience working in programming languages commonly used in engineering (Python, MATLAB, etc.)
  • Familiarity with 3D CAD software, preferably PTC creo
  • Experience performing FEA analysis on complex structures, preferably with ANSYS Mechanical
  • Experience communicating complex technical topics to internal and external audiences through written and verbal means

 The base salary range for this position in California is $112,200.00- 151,776.00. The salary may be higher or lower depending on the budget and the candidate's experience, knowledge, skills, and qualifications.

The pay range for this position is $112,200.00 - $151,776.00 annually. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location.
