About Smart Infrastructure – Electrification and Automation:
The Electrification and Automation (EA) Business Unit offers the full range of energy distribution systems and solutions for all markets and through all sales channels. We provide reliable power distribution grids of today while investing into our Future Grids portfolio and applications to create the power distribution grid of the future. Our comprehensive portfolio meets the growing technical requirements of today’s and tomorrow’s power grid!
The Utility Systems & Solutions business in Siemens’ Electrification & Automation business unit oversees the expansion and advancement of EA's Utility and Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) markets. Within its comprehensive product portfolio, one finds an array of offerings, such as medium voltage switchgear (AIS & GIS), Outdoor Circuit Breakers, MV Control, Power Equipment Centers, Overhead distribution products, low voltage motor control centers, photovoltaic (PV) Inverters, and supplementary MV and LV products. These elements are consistently integrated into full-fledged electrical packaged solutions deployed in substations, power plants, and renewable energy power generation projects.
We are looking for a Sr Application Engineer - Utility Vertical. This position will be based in Wendell, NC.
The Application Engineer delivers expert engineering services with minimal guidance, adeptly interpreting customer drawings and specifications for manufacturing or related products. This role also actively collaborates with the Sales & Business Development teams during project negotiations. The Application Engineer excels at deciphering project plans, one-lines, three-lines, schematics, and specifications to configure systems, offer technical support, and craft compelling commercial proposals.
You’ll make an impact by:
- Promote packaged solution (AIS & GIS) business generation comprising of Switchgear and Motor Control Centers <38kV Voltage Class by preparing customer proposals that best fits our customer needs and ensuring competitive pricing.
- Generate value engineered proposals for our customers for projects involving and medium voltage switchgear, motor controllers, transformers, bus ducts and power equipment centers.
- Work closely with Siemens Sales and customers in the utility markets on technical, contractual and commercial issues.
- Stakeholder management during the bid-process to ensure alignment across different business unit functions
- Work closely with third party suppliers to provide a solution that best fits the customer application
- Support the Sales and BDM team in opportunity pursuits
- Participates in the design of complex hardware and software application solutions
- Participates in tracking complex orders to ensure that equipment, cost and delivery objectives are met by responding to customers promptly
- Participates in keeping records of complex specification costs and price estimates
- Participates in recommending alternatives or changes to complex customer specifications and/or processes to better match Company products to customer needs and to improve productivity.
You’ll win us over by having the following qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in technical role
- Profound knowledge of power distribution systems design principles, components, and systems architecture.
- Strong understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals, including power distribution, control systems, and circuitry.
- Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving technical challenges.
- Familiarity with relevant industry standards and regulations, such as NEC and UL requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Utility Switchgear equipement
- Familiarity with Siemens Tools like NxTools, Compas, PM@Siemens LoA, SieOps

The pay range for this position is $102,459 - $175,644 annually with a target incentive of 10% of the base salary. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location.
