Position Overview
Siemens Mobility Customer Service seeks an experienced Instructional Designer to join the Mobility Academy team to develop comprehensive training programs that equip Field Service Technicians and customer maintenance teams to safely service and maintain Siemens locomotives and coaches. In this role, you'll balance hands-on course development with strategic management of external vendors to create a range of blended learning solutions. You'll partner with engineers and subject matter experts to translate complex vehicle systems (propulsion, brake, electrical, HVAC, safety, digital interfaces) into engaging, practical learning content that technicians can confidently apply in the field. This position can be located in Chicago, IL; Wilmington, DE; Lexington, NC or Washington DC.
What your day-to-day will look like:
- Partner with field service leadership, product engineers and SMEs Conduct systematic needs analysis, job task analysis, and gap analysis; work with leadership to prioritize learning initiatives.
- Design comprehensive curriculum frameworks, course sequencing, prerequisite structures, and progressive learning pathways for different roles.
- Design and develop instructor-led courses, e-learning modules, micro-learning videos, job aids, and hands-on training exercises for Field Service Technicians and customer maintenance teams.
- Author content using Articulate Storyline and other authoring tools.
- Create instructor-led facilitator guides for our trainers and facilitate "train-the-trainer" sessions.
- Write instructional requirements and design specifications for vendors.
- Oversee vendor project management, timelines, budgets, quality assurance and user acceptance testing of deliverables.
- Participate in occasional site visits to service depots to observe maintenance procedures and collect content for training development as needed.
- Design quizzes, competency assessments, knowledge checks, and post-training evaluations; analyze assessment data and recommend content improvements.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Maintain training documentation, version control, content libraries, and instructional design standards/templates for consistency.
To thrive in this role, you have:
- Certificate, Associate, or Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Adult Education, Learning Technology, or related field with 2+ years of technical training development experience; OR High School Diploma / GED with 4+ years of professional technical training design experience with demonstrated expertise in eLearning authoring and course building.
- Demonstrated ability to build professional-quality courses with eLearning authoring tools (e.g. Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia or equivalent).
- Ability to adapt instructional approaches for different experience levels (entry-level technicians through advanced specialists).
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.).
- Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS) for content deployment and learner management.
- Experience managing external vendors relationships for training development projects (e.g., RFP process, scope and project management, quality assurance, etc.).
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills; ability to partner effectively with technical experts.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to run multiple projects.
- Setting you apart from others would be the ability to break down complex mechanical and electrical systems into clear, memorable learning experiences. Having a background in rail, public transportation, automotive, aerospace, or heavy equipment maintenance industries is preferred with knowledge of locomotive and coach propulsion systems, braking systems, electrical architecture, and digital train control interfaces. Direct experience designing and building training for locomotives, coaches, rail vehicles, or similar complex transportation or technical equipment would be a plus. Basic to proficient experience with simulation authoring tools (e.g., Unity, Unreal Engine, etc.). Project management experience or PMP/CAPM certification and experience building training in a regulated environment would be great.
Physical Demands
This role is primarily remote with occasional travel (estimated 10% annually) to Siemens Mobility offices or customer depots. When on-site, you may be required to:
- Walk through locomotive and coach interiors – navigate confined spaces, climb stairs and ladders, duck under low overhead clearances, and move through cabins, engine compartments.
- Observe maintenance procedures – stand for extended periods in shop environments while watching technicians work on equipment, systems, and components at various heights
- Gather or support vendor gathering of training content – hold, operate, or assist with camera equipment (including 360-degree cameras) to photograph and video locomotives/coaches from multiple angles and positions; may require standing on ladders, platforms, or maintenance stands to collect overhead or elevated system details
- Work in shop environments – be exposed to typical maintenance depot conditions including noise, vibration, temperature variations, dust, and potential shop hazards; ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by facility safety protocols
No significant physical demands beyond standard office work for remote duties.

The pay range for this position is $81,600.00 - $114,852.00 annually. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location.
